http not working but https is

I have a XP Pro SP3  workstation that suddenly lost the ability to go to any http site. It will go to a https site.  I have done extension virus checking, root kit checking, xp tcpip repair, winsock reset, dns flush, etc.  This problem affects both IE7 and Firefox.  There are no firewalls on the machine (firewall control is at the gateway, and no other users are having problems).  AVG 8 is installed on the computer and it seems to have removed the ClearSearch malware a few days ago.  I suspect that the registry is hosed BUT I can access any HTTP site in SAFE MODE.   This effects all profiles on the machine.

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Okay, the problem was with AVG. I turned off the web monitor feature and suddenly everything worked. Apparently it thinks there is something wrong with it and shuts it down hard.  I even had problems uninstalling AVG.  Right now, it is off and everything is working.  I will reinstall AVG in the morning and see what happens.  It if comes back, then I will open a support ticket with AVG to see what in h*ll it is doing.

I cannot provide the link to prove my state right now but it's better to revert or downgrade to a previous version or wait for an update...
