I have 2 update panels, one on my masterpage and one on my content page. I have the one of the content page working fine on a button click event but I can not find how to communicate with the one on the masterpage. The button I am clicking is on the content page. Can anybody tell me how I can do this?

What do you want do do?
If i understand, from the code beind, You could use Page.Master to access the masterpage, find the update panel using findControl (and do your things) and call the update method the trigger update.
