HTML: Install software over the web

I am taking over a website for a church and we want to use a toolbar, something for people to use to get back to the church website easily. This needs to download first and then install. Most people are not going to be computer savvy enough to know how to use the save VS open feature. I need a way to start the install immediately upon clicking on a link instead of prompting for save or open. Is there a quick way to do this?

No, as that would be a security problem.
The only workaround I can think of is to use signed applets or active-x controls.

Most websites deal with the issue by placing visual instructions that walk the user through installation.
Which seems to be sufficient enough.  Even Adobe has this in place for Flash:
