How do I get WSUS do download and install updates?

WSUS used to work until several weeks ago.
When I go to "Updates" --> All Updates, I select the only two updates to install which
are the ones I selected several weeks ago to install but nothing happened.  Under
approval it says "Install 2/5".

I also get a message on the bottom where it says status "COmputers with errors:" 1.
How do I find out which computer has the error and how do I fix it?
It has been several weeks and I have not received any updates.

Please advise on how to troubleshoot?

I went to "Computers" --> "All Computers.
It listed one computer as failed, user1.my_domain.local.
It says updates with errors=2.
How do I fix this so it does no longer say updates with errors=2?

SBS 2003 R2
WSUS 3 svs pk1
failure on both the server and the workstation.
no installation takes place.
as well as no new updates appaear in wsus in section Opdates-->All Updates
but I have under Critical Updates over 200 and for security updates over 1000
dhoustonie,
those updates in critical updates and security updates are from the year 2003.
Do I need them, I installed SBS on 2007 and I have the latest svs packs.
SHould I delete them all?
How come you are looking in the WSUS management tool and not the SBS Server Management?
and let SBS Manage most of your patching needs?

just to clarify the server and desktops have downloaded updates from WSUS and when they try and install them they fail on the server or desktop?
Thanks
David
the server and clients downloaded and installed in the past but for the last two months it has not.
I have not had time to go over the updates.
When I finally checked and synchronize nothing happened, only what is mentioned above.

WHich is better for updates WSUS or SBS Server MAnagement?
SHould I disable one to use the other?
If so, how?
How do I use the SBS Server Management?
dhoustononie,

When I click on Update Services in SBS I get the following message:
"Windows Small Business Server (Windows SBS) Update Services is not running because it automatically turns off if you customize Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). For a list of specific settings that cause Windows SBS Update Services to turn off, see the Microsoft Web site. Even if WSUS is managing updates for your network, the accuracy of the status in the Windows SBS monitoring report or on the Update Services home page cannot be guaranteed. To use Windows SBS Update Services, reverse the changes that you have made to WSUS or reinstall Windows SBS 2003 R2. "
How can I repair WSUS or use Windows Update Services?
sorry for the delay.
The Windows update in Server Management is WSUS, it is integrated so that you can see patch information in the dalay reports.
I keep server management running for this information.
There are certain ways to install WSUS 3 sp1 on SBS. There is a whitepaper on it here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708091.aspx

But what we need to do to fix this is run the script here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945985

David
so i should run method # 2 not method #1?
yes run the sql script.
nothing happened.
it went back to a command line.
i went to SBS, Update Services,Change Update Services Settings and i get an error message:"Windows Small Business Server (Windows SBS) Update Services is not running because it automatically turns off if you customize Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). For a list of specific settings that cause Windows SBS Update Services to turn off, see the Microsoft Web site. any solution to my problem?
can you run it from the command prompt and upload the details from the command prompt screen
how do i run the script?
i have in the command prompt: cd c:\tobedeleted
from there I enter at the command prompt: FixR2.sql but all i get is an error message of:
C:\tobedeleted\FixR2.sql is not a valid win32 application
Then when I click on "OK" it brings me back to the command prompt stating "Access is Denied"
from the bottom of the KB article:
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, locate the following folder:
%programfiles% \Update Services\Setup
At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
executesql.exe -S MICROSOFT##SSEE -i C:\FixR2.SQL -l C:\Output.log

copy and paste the line that is in bold and copy into a command prompt.
this assumes that you have saved the script to C:\ and that the WSUS database has been installed to the Microsoft#SSEE instance.
I tried the above and nothing happened.
how do ic check to see if the WSUS database has been installed to the Microsft#SSEE instance?
If it was a default install of WSUS 3 then it would install there
you are sure that the file is in the c:\ drive and is saved as fixr2.sql and not if you used Notepad saved with a .txt extention?

yes, the file is in the C:\ drive.
yes, saved the file as FixR2.sql
here is the attachment
what is the script to change directory?
i tried different combinations but last time i got lucky in guessing it.
what do i type to get the prombt at update services/setup?
what do I have to type to change directory?
i figured out the dos.
i forgot to use to enter "program files" in the path
this is what I get for my output.log file.
change the extension from txt to .log
Output.txt
i tried placing the fixr2.sql file in the setup folder as well but nothing happens.
Hi again, sorry for the delay, it looks like everything is there and no need for the script to run.
There are a few other methods of fixing this in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. If you email me at david@damecomputers.com and with your permission I will have a look at the server itself and check some of the settings in WSUS and correct where required.
Thanks
David
David,

Cannot allow anyone to access our server.
Because this company is in the health/medical field, by law we cannot allow this.
Whatever details you need from the server I could provide to you in detail by doing a screen capture and placing it on a word document so yu can view what you need.
I hope this is a positive step forward to fixing my dilemma.
Thanx.

Josh

I just did option 1.
And click Restart under      Services-->Update services.
It now works.
I have a question regarding when there are installation errors for a PC.
How do I get rid of that notice?
If I can't, I get the option to connect via terminal services to troubleshoot.
Where exactly on that PC do I check it?
Also, how can the computers start to do the updates?
regarding the updates I realized it did it on its own.
but how about the other two questions.
Can you answer them?
dhoustine,
