Apple Mail Does Not Send SMTP

I can receive mail and send mail from Windows Outlook
From new MAC with Leopard Mail I can receive mail but cannot send.  Spent hours on the phone with Apple and with RoadRunner (BrightHouse Cable)  No joy - They both insist that it is the others fault.  I found lots of online problems with MAC SMTP going "offline" and not sending - same problem I have, but no real solution.
I deleted mail program and user plist files and reinstalled mail and user settings
Held my tongue to the left and the right - No sucess - Four hours.....

Hi there,

I use Mac Mail with no trouble. Can you post some more information. LIke, who hosts your email? Do you know for sure the port they are using for SMTP? Do they require authentication? etc. Maybe even post what your SMTP settings are ('cept for password of course) so we can see.

I find sending via SMTP from a Mac to be as reliable as any other type.  Mac Mail is a sturdy email application so I am guessing you're missing a setting somewhere.

jimjo95 is right .. it may be as simple as getting the authentication settings right.

ASKER

Host is Road Runner \ Brighthouse Cable
SMTP is smtp-server.indy.rr.com
Pop is pop-server.indy.rr.com
Requires Password authentication
Neither requires SSL

Settings work fine on a PC with Outlook Express
There are many posts online of others having this issue, but remedy

any solution on that issue yet?

i have the same issue here:

i want to have apple mail (mac os x tiger) listen on imap and smtp of a windows 2003 sbs. imap works fine while smtp is being refused.

the curious thing is that it works perfectly when i do the same settings with thunderbird (tested on the mac and also on a ubuntu-based laptop).

any suggestions?

Ran into same problem with my Road Runner company and host.  Both were pointing fingers at each other. Spent hours on the phone with both companies.  Finally, I scrapped all email accounts that weren't working, dumped my plist and recreated new accounts using mail/file/add account steps.  Now all is working fine.
