I'm looking for a program to securely erase a hard drive

I'm cleaning up the computer room and getting rid of old pc's laying around.  I've removed the hd's from them and want to securely erase them before getting rid of them.  I have a laptop with a usb device that allows me to connect an hd externally as a second drive while running off of the laptops hd.

I've found a few programs that will let me erase hd's after booting from a floppy or cd but they would erase the laptops hd as well!  I can simply select the hd and format it but that isn't secure.  Are there any programs that would let me securely erase only the hd I select, preferably while running from the laptops hd?
