What support tools are available for the proliant servers and which ones work well

Hi
I 18 proliant servers ranging from DL140 to ML370 running windows server. I see that HP offers quite a few software downloads for management tools but I am having a hard time figuring out which ones to use. Can someone tell me which ones are good for monitoring sever health status in my environment.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The DL1xx series doesn't support the HP Insight Agents, but for the 300 series you can use HP Systems Insight Agents (free), combined with a free tool called HP Systems Insight Manager.

The Insight agents will show you hardware status, and includes a log for events such as hardware failures or system crashes.  HP Systems Insight manager will monitor all of the insight agents (as well as any other devices that have SNMP) and will also give you nice ILO management controls if you use that.

I believe HP does have a scaled back version of the insight agents for the 1xx series of servers.

To get HP Insight Agents, install the Proliant Support Pack listed for your OS from support.hp.com.  To get HP Systems Insight Manager go to http://www.hp.com/go/hpsim

HP SIM also has plugins available to manage virtual machines, as well as do performance tracing on all of your servers, but those are pay-for addons.  Hope this helps!

Good luck!

Yes.  Insight Manager can send e-mails based on certain conditions.  You can even have it be an SNMP trap manager for all devices / events on your network.  Insight Manager can e-mail, page, and more.  You can set up schedules for who's responsibility it is, or assign systems to individual techs.
SIM can also be used to install and configure the insight agents themselves, or do basic server management.
