've been wondering about modifying the software of my DSL-2540T routers.  The problem is that I can't find any good information.

My hope was to be able to run VPN right off the router rather than my computer.

Does anybody know of any info on modding this routers?

Usually, if nobody has ported to it yet, it's because the writers haven't had a board loaned/donated to them so they can do the tinkering firsthand. Almost-certainly that model is based on the AR7, but you'd need to take it apart and check to see.
OpenWRT says the AR7 boards are a work in progress - see http://wiki.openwrt.org/AR7Port

DD-WRT doesn't list any of the DSL-* models in Supported Hardware, as you apparently discovered.
