I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There are couple of mail server you can install for this task

examp : sendmail, postfix, qmail

i work on sendmail and i always follow this link

Ive used sendmail only in that some websites Ive used need to find the sendmail binary to send messages.

Ive read about exim and postfix

I finally decided on qmail

qmail does not have a package format, and you have to install it from source, but because everyone else has to install qmail from source as well, I find that going to another server on another distro that qmail works just like the one on the first server and first distro.  This has big advantages.

my vote is qmail, but its no easy deal, you'll need to study and learn, but then you should be doing that anyway for something as complicated as an MTA server.

ok if you need easy then go for sendmail, if you dont need to check email from outlook then you dont need sendmail with Tls support, just sendmail would be enough

let me sent you some easy link, then i will go through with you

I think the client expects it to work with Outlook.  Please post the link.
ok if client want to work with outlook then you should of consider Tls

reason : when outlook will try to connect to mailserver, it will sent user authentication as plain text format, and it would be serious security problem because password will go over net as plain text.
i would never allow user to access my mail server as plain text format

for easy understanding : http://www.chinalinuxpub.com/doc/www.siliconvalleyccie.com/linux-hn/sendmail.htm

but the link i have provided before

its a copy and past tutorial, you just have to carefully copy all the command and past it on command line .

After everything is installed and configured how does one create the actual email account?
its easy

create the user in the system, then add the user name is /etc/mail/aliases

then run this command : make aliases

if you are not comfortable with command
then install webmin ( it has nice interface to work with sendmail)

ohh another thing, you need to install dovecot to allow user to download email from mailserver

best software is dovecot which will work as pop3

Excellent information and references - thank you.
let me know if you want more information.

but one thing i will say: if you dont secure your server in first night, following day when you will wake up you will see  your server is in block list !! it happended with me before. so before putting this in public , make sure its not open realy.

good luck
