movie maker crashes every time view is change to details

Movie maker opens fine no problems, if you insert a file ANY file and the choose to change your view to DETAILS it crashes with the error as in the attached file.
Although this might not seem much of a problem (as we could choose not to view in this way) this error will also appear after an undetermind lenght of time and you have no choice except to close MM.
We are a school this error happens on every workstation with all users even admin.
I hope I have supplied enough info

Thanks Adam

Hello madaslip, those clips on the story board what video format are they?
Are they all the same format?
Un-highlight any videos, as one thought, in the snap you have the 5th highlighted, can't put it on details as WMM will think you wish to see this one in details :)
Check the files types for these clips are listed in the preferences.
Any with DRM?
Secondly,
MPEG-2 files are not a supported file type in MM. Are your MPEG files MPEG-2 files? Also, some avi files will not work in MM  if they have divx codecs used
Do you have any divx codecs installed? All you need is teh media player.
Do you know what codecs were used to encode your video files if they are avi?
If you don't know, then GSpot is a free utility that will identify them.
drop one on then wait, then use the proposed codecs and solutions
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/GSpot
Just testing this, on my WMM 2
For the details view I just rightclick the storyboard empty space and put it on details

Also I just use the drag and drop, it supports WMV and avi.
Not mpeg. Even with all codecs
It only supports one video clip at a time how did you manage to add 5?
To see the other videos I imported or added in my collection I  have to open the collections panel but it will still only show one clip on the storybaord.

Please let me just clarify the situation.
it makes no difference what files you are using, you can insert ANY MEDIA file, say for instance a jpg, any jpg, any size, any amount from 1 to 100 it makes no difference, as soon as you select details the crash as state before displays EVERY TIME, MM then closes.
This is not an incorrect media problem
This is not a Codec problem

Thanks Adam
Unknown software exception (0xc0000409)
This error is sometimes caused by a buffer overrun.
a buffer overflow, or buffer overrun, is an anomalous condition where a process attempts to store data beyond the boundaries of a fixed-length buffer. The result is that the extra data overwrites adjacent memory locations.
Possible fixes.
Upgrade ram
Update the video drivers
Run a disc cleanup, clear out temp folders and internet history.
Defrag the hard drives.
Any space problems on the discs?
check the names of the files ( long names)
check the location of the files.
If they are on a mapped drive or shared folder?
If two resources are using same ports
Are these work station connected  using a firewire connection/wired ethernet or wireless?
Maybe upgrade the ethernet cables.
They should be getting a speed of 100.0Mbps transfer.
Is windows movie maker installed on each workstation?

Hi there Merete
Most of what you have mentioned I have already looked into proved/disproved or is not the case/relevant , my biggest suspision has been as your suggestion of "If two resources are using same ports" we did recently up date to Office 2007, I have unistalled this, but this has not changed anything. i could progressivly uninstall every program one by one but we do have nearly 200 programs

to answer your questions
Upgrade ram:.......... don't see this is relevant as all was fine
Update the video drivers:................ don't see this is relevant as it makes no differance what make of machine it is installed on ( all drivers are up to date)

Run a disc cleanup, clear out temp folders and internet history.
Defrag the hard drives. never had to
Any space problems on the discs?
check the names of the files ( long names)
the above 4 can't be the case as something has changed to effect all machines

check the location of the files. even if you use files from the local hard drive and also use the local drive for temp working (MM options setting) makes no diff
If they are on a mapped drive or shared folder?................ as a bove
If two resources are using same ports??????????
Are these work station connected  using a firewire connection/wired ethernet or wireless?.............. ethernet
Maybe upgrade the ethernet cables........... this is not the problem
They should be getting a speed of 100.0Mbps transfer............  this is not the problem
Is windows movie maker installed on each workstation?..... yes we have over 400 workstations its on all of them and it happens on all of them

I await some input
Thanks, Adam
