Dell sound works in Dell diagnostic utility but not in Windows

I have a Dell Precision with xp pro sp3 and the sound will not work, the play buttons are not grayed out, nothing is on mute and when I run the Dell diagnostics utility from the boot menu the sound is loud and clear.  Dell told me it is a Windows OS issue because the hardware is working.  I have tried loading the updated drivers from Dell, nothing. I have also removed everything from the sound and rebooted and then reinstalled the drivers, nothing.  it is a sigmatel integrated sound card.  Any help is appreciated.

I had this before with the Sigmatel sound cards.  The driver from Dell doesn't seem to work with SP3.  You need to get the one from the Sigmatel Web site or from one of the other Dell machine listings.

to Ptpringle: It didn't work before I upgraded to sp3, I upgraded to see if it would resolve the problem. I will check out the sites and let you know, Thank you for  your input.
Have you checked to make sure that the "Windows Audio" service is running?

1. Go to Start | Run and type "services.msc" (without the quotes)
2. Scroll down to "Windows Audio".
3. Right-click on "Windows Audio" and select "Start"

What happens?
