cannot connect to norton/ symantec website to activate my product

I recently bought Norton Antivirus 2009 with Antispyware.  I am running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3.  Norton 09 installed with no problem until it tried to connect to their website to activate the product.  It states "No response from the Symantec server".  I then tried the below solution to a problem similar to mine that I found on this website:

One of the virusses you had probably put a line in your hosts file. It's a hidden file at:

Open it in notepad and remove every entry except " localhost"



This did not work for me.  I then went and downloaded AVG Antivirus Free version 8.0 to see if I could use it to remove any possible viruses on my computer.  It responded the same way that Norton did.  It would not let me connect to the AVG website to receive any update, etc.  My internet connection is fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

I actually just finished a computer with this same exact problem not more than 30 minutes ago.

First give this a try here:

if that doesnt work download Malwarebytes from or go to and search for it there and download it. I did notice with this specific computer that would not load either. A quick scan should be good enough. After removal, you should be able to activate. Also, if you need help with anything Norton related, go to
