pvk and spc file import

i want to install a certificate on my machine. (windows xp pro).

i have been given a mycert.spc and a mykey.pvk.

i have imported the mycert.spc into my computer certificate store but dont know what to do with the key.

    whoops i spoke too soon!

    i ran pvkimport
    entered my key password
    selected the personal store to put my cert in.
    got the message that i had successfully imported

    and them went into the certificate store and cannot see my certificate???

    any ideas?
