Is there a way to add an external contact to a distribution list created on the exchange server without having to create a domain account for the user?

I have several distribution lists that I have created for people in the office.  HOwever now they want people from outside the domain to be included in the list.  I thought there was a way to create an external contact in exchange and then add that user to the distribution list.
