In CA Arcserve 9 how can one format the tape with the current day and time on a job that runs every night?

Use a Custom and not a Rotation or GFS job.
Use "*" for the tape name.
erase the tape prior to the backup each night
   manually via the Device window
   or use tapetest.exe for a stand alone tape drive or chgtest.exe for a library.

run either from a command box to get the internal help. it can be added to the backup as a Pre command.
