What is the best practice for migrating local user profiles to domain profiles?

Hello experts,
I'd like to kindly ask for your advice.
I'm going to migratie medium sized network (200 clients) from workgroup environment to Active Directory Domain.
There is not much of any kind of homogenity on the network, but let's say this question is related to Windows XP clients.
What do you consider to be the best practice when migrating so far local user accounts to a domain? To be more specific - the goal here is to migrate the user's documents.
The current plan is to migrate 1-by-1, but I strongly belive there exist a tool or procedure that is able to do this either quickly or massively.
Can you please kick me the right direction?
I have some scripting ideas, but I would prefer some more correct and robust solution.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This should get you started in the right direction and I have been using previous releases of this document for several years worth of migration with different companies I have consulted with...  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc974427.aspx
