Soundcard stops working.

I run Vista Home Premium, SP1, on my laptop. As I use the computer, once in a while the system all of a sudden does not recognize the sound card. After several times rebooting the system it reappears.  Does anybody know what the cause of thus nuisance could be and how to fix it?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

if it is a separate card, you can test with another one.
what exactly do you mean with "does not recognize the sound card " ?   where is it not recognised? error in device manager?

I can't take out the card from the laptop. What I mean is that when I go to Device Manager the card is not listed. As a matter of fact no sound device is listed. When I reboot, it reapears. Sometime I have to reboot several times.
if it recently worked ok, try a system restore to a previous date
an update may have caused it
