Emails stuck in mailroot\vsi 1\queue folder of Exchange Server 2003

Good Morning to all,
For the past 11 days, 10,000+ emails have been getting stuck in the C:\Prog Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\queue folder of my Windows 2003 sp2 server.  The first emails get stuck anywhere from 2:30 AM-2:45 AM.  So as a temporary solution, I would restart the server and all emails get delivered.  Throughout the workday emails are flowing smooth but then again get stuck in the morning.  This server has been running great and I've had TrendMicro's Client Server Messaging (CSM) suite running on here for the past 3.5 years.
Things I've tried:
- Stopped TrendMicro CSM and its maintenance task that runs in morning
- Stopped Symantec Brightmail services
- Stopped our online data backup
- In the Exchange Systems Manager (ESM), deleted 2 emails in Queue under a ???.pitt.edu address but was for recepient w/ an invalid email address.
- Checked Event Viewer and saw several event id 7010 errors but when looking up this error, it states that an email address tried to send an email to an invalid address. I've attached the event viewer logs.

- Backup is functioning properly and getting notification every day that it is successful.
- Stores looked like they were mounted properly, but how can I verify that?  Is there a command I need to perform?
- How can I change the Online Maintenance's starting time?
- Integrated Windows Authentication was already enabled and I only have 1 Exchange server.
Thanks
Hi,
  • Check your Event Viewer for anything funny aorund 2:00AM and send logs for that time.
  • Also via Exchange System Manager see if the Database is Mounted.
  • Also can you give me a screenshot of the 7010 error I am unable to view error details it as I do not have required DLL files for Exchange on my Lappy
Cheers

- There was nothing out of the ordinary around 2AM.  Online Defragmentation of public folder at 2AM.  Event ID 700, 701, 1221, 8273, and 8274.  Also, why is there a defrag on the public folder at 2AM and 3AM.  Where on the server can I change these times.
- Database is mounted because we are all able to open Outlook and OWA, but I'll double check tomorrow morning when emails get stuck.
- Also, where on the server can I change the Online Maintenance starting times?
- Attached is a screen shot of 7010 error in the Application log

Thank you very much Nitin!
I will go into ESM to edit the Online Maintenance schedule and read up on the link you provided.  I will get back to you tomorrow and give you the status.  Is there anything else I should look into?
I am still keen on the Errors if any....during that time....I feel you got to look at it closely again
Cheers

After modifiying the online defrag schedule, the emails are not exactly stuck but moving out of the queue box very very slowly.  This could be what was happening initially but just never really noticed it.  Nevertheless, is 6:15AM and emails from 2:38AM are slowly moving out of the queue folder.  This process may have started at 1AM b/c that is when the online defrag of the priv1.edb starts.  I will leave it alone for about 2 hours and if it is still slow, then I'll have to restart server again.  The "Exchange Information Store" service is enabled/started, and the "Mailbox Store" (under ESM) is still mounted.  Where can I check to see the status on these 2 items...nothing out of the ordinary in the Event Viewer.
thank you very much
Just schedule the Online Maintenace even back, say around 10pm in the night if your bckups are starting at 2:00AM and try.
But if mails are going slow, then verify. But may I ask how come you have 100s of mails being sent at night. Is this server catering to global users?
Thanks

Emails are definitely coming in very slow.  It is now 10:00AM and the earliest emails in the queue are from 2:47AM.  These are in the C:\Program Files\exchsrvr\mailroot\vsi 1\queue folder of the Exchange Server. I will be restarting the server....

Server is fully up and now the earliest emails are from 9:57AM and emails are flowing smoothly.  Not sure what is causing this....now earliest emails are from 10:20AM.
We do not have global users, most of these emails that come in at night are spam so we filter them w/ Symantec Brightmail Anti-Spam.  I also tried stopping Brightmail but still emails were flowing very very slow.
do not worry, let the queue get cleared up !

Emails again got stuck in queue folder.  At 4:30AM, earliest email was 2:33AM and there were over 60MB of emails in the queue folder.  I waited til 6:00AM and queue folder increased to 63MB, so I restarted and emails in the queue folder started to flowing again and now (8:38AM) it is at 201kb.  Something happens at 2:30 and I can't pinpoint what it is.  If I delete the "Queue" folder in the c:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1" directory, then recreate it, will that help or will it just make things worse?

1. Stopped SMTP
2. Renamed "Queue" folder
3. Applied Sender and Recipient Filters
4. Enabled the "Filter Recipients who are not in the Directory"

Distributed 60 points to "gupnit" and would like the rest of my points refunded.
