Hi there;

A nice link for you:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545

By default, you don't have to reformat your drive. The installer will merely upgrade your operating system and it should leave all your files and settings intact. Having said that, make sure you back everything up all the same...

If you have 3rd party enhancement software on the machine, you might run into some trouble. Elsewise, you might have to reinstall a couple/few apps ... but that beats starting from scratch and putting everything back on the machine.

The middle archive and install might work best if you have the room on the drive. This will basically add a new OS folder, copy some os files over, and keep your apps and prefs intact if you so wish.

If you have problems or want to learn more about your install options.

You can hold the c key, or stick the disc in the drive and click on the install icon -- after which the machine should boot to the DVD without the need to hold the c key.
