Trouble sending mail to RR.com, mail is stuck in the que

I can send mail from accounts on a sbs 2003 exchange server to almost domains excepts tampabay.rr.com email address.  The servers' ISP is brighthouse/Tampa Road runner, I succesfully sent mail to hotmial, yahoo, my own domains. Everytime i try to send to  rr address it gets stuck in the queue.

nslookup work fine, reverse dns appears to be working from free internet look ups. I sent a friend an email to gmail andhe said that the revese was domian.com rather than mail.domain.com.  Not really sure what is going on. please help

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Check with your ISP and get the Reverse DNS entry setup correctly.  Alternatively replay the mail via your ISP's smtp server.  This can be found in System manager, connectors, New Conector.

I double checked with the ISP and the reverse is correct.

The smallbusiness smtp connector-tampabay.rr.com has a small blue symbol on the folder and is in a retry state. In the additional queue infotmaitons - it sys "An SMTP protocol error occurred"

I did this
"To see why a remote SMTP server rejects protocol requests, enable SMTP logging for the virtual server or use Network Monitor to trace the network communication. To activate SMTP logging, on the virtual server's General tab, select Enabling logging, and specify the logging format you prefer under Active log format."

Most likely you are either using a dynamic IP (or at least Road Runner thinks you are) or your server is an open relay.
0
seaweed27Author Commented:
I tested the open relay, but will again. I just got off the phone with the ISP, they sugested and did delete and recreate a new ptr reccord for reverse DNS.   We will see if that resolves.

are you using a static public IP?
0
jlapalmeCommented:
Can you check if this condition exists in your configuration.
Your mailserver is claiming to be a host other than what it really is (the SMTP greeting should be a 3-digit code, followed by a space or a dash, then the host name). If your mailserver sends out E-mail using this domain in its EHLO or HELO, your E-mail might get blocked by anti-spam software. Note that the hostname given in the SMTP greeting should have an A record pointing back to the same server.

mail.<domain>.com claims to be invalid hostname 'SMTP': <br />   220 SMTP Mail Server ESMTP <br />

It turns out that RR local doesnt know or think to check thier customer against thier own security site.
I Found out from a friend who has much xp as a mail server admin that RR has a website call
Security.rr.com. After going to the site I was able to lookup our static ip and learn it had been flagged for abuse a long time ago and never removed. I requested removal and mail started flowing normally.
Again the website to check if you have a similar issue is

Security.rr.com
