Can you retrieve pictures from an Ipod?

Knowing that he was going to reformat hs PC Hardrive, my friend copied his pictures to his IPod.
When he had reinstalled the operating system and software he synchronised his IPod with ITunes and lost all his music. He dididn't realise that he should have saved the  ITunes settings.
The pictures are still on the IPod, he can see them.
How can he save the pictures back to his PC? He's concerned that he might lose them in the process.

As the IPod is one of hte newest I will go for the manual recovery.
That's using the IPod as a Hard disk and using the explorer to copy the files, also there's a small chance that his music is still there.
