I would like to know if there is any current software-based solution available to generate random 1-10gig of network traffic. No matter what type of packets are being generated.

There's a tool I saw an expert post here some time ago called NetCPS. You run it as a server on one machine, and as a client on the other, and it will transfer data as fast as it can over the network and record it's speeds. You can specify how many megs to transfer before stopping, as well as which port to use, and the server machine obviously has to have that port open.
