Use chkdsk as a repair and recovery utility only, not as a regular maintenance utility.

chkdsk detects and fixes low level errors on your hard disk. Is only necessary to run if you suspect that there are problems on your disk, which can be caused by improper shutdown, power outage, or some other kind of inconsistency. If your disk does not have errors on it (which is the case 99% of the time), running chkdsk does nothing useful.

In theory, there is no downside to running it every night, since if there are no problems, chkdsk shouldn't do anything. In reality, I don't trust anything to regularely dabble with the low-level aspects of the file system. Not even microsoft's chkdsk utility.

hi,
you should run chkdsk only if you suspect a harddisk/file error or if the space on your drive shows up incorectly (ex: it appears you only have 5 gb free and you  know it should be more).
otherwise you could schedule a defragmentation once a week or something like that because it will increase the file access speed and the defrag utility does a check disk by default before it starts defragmenting.

Uni ... your query appears well answered already but you may be interested in this article by Marc Liron ( Microsoft MVP ), who encourages users to run this utility at least once a month >

chckdsk should not be used frequently; only when you suspect disk problems, or OS problems.
it was necessary in the old days, to run it dayly, or weekly, because of the limited space of the disk drives, causing problems more often.
So - for now, i see no advantages, only disadvantages : takes time and is a supplemental charge on the disk mechanics.
Be aware that, depending of the kind of disk problem, chkdsk may make things even worse....eg, when trying to repair (bad) data from bad sectors
