Can a domain trust be created between two completely unrelated domains?

This is more of a "is it possible question".

You have two domains that each have their own domain controllers and separate networks behind firewalls. Example: Microsoft.com and Amazon.com.

Can a domain trust be setup between the two so they share user accounts...allowing  a user to only have to log into Windows once to have access to both domain resources?

- If so, how would the Active Directory Domains and Trusts wizard be able to join two separate domains? Doesn't one need to be a child domain of the other to show up in the wizard?

Some explantion as to 'how' would have been good instead of just a 'yes you can' answer.
