thunderbird not responding os x

Thunderbird "stops responding" at least one a day.  I can't say that I've seen a pattern as to when it happens. I'm at a loss to explain it and have not been able to find a reference to this problem anywhere else.  The only way out have have at this point is to "force quit" the app. I'm running OS X 15.5.5 on a MacBook Pro with Thunderbird 2.0.0.17.

I seems the problem was an extension. Anytime my Mac goes to sleep with Thunderbird running and the Lightning extension installed, Thunderbird comes out of "sleep" "not responding". I uninstalled Lightning and the problem went away. Since I want to use Lightning, I quit out of Thunderbird before closing my Mac and putting it to "sleep".
I followed your suggestion about uninstalling extensions and found that it was the Lightning extension that was causing the problem. Thanks for the tip.
