Maintence Plan Error

I have created a simple Maintence plan to - Check database integrity
                                                                   - Backup database
On Executing the plan I get a 'Execution Failed' Error
The log for this Maintence plan is as follows -  ' Unable to start execution of step 1 (reason: line(1): Syntax error). the step failed. ?

If I manually copy the T-SQL for both steps of the Maintence plan into a new query and execute the query, it completes both steps without error???

we have had more advanced maintence plans working on a schedule for some time without issue. these produce the same error as above.
I am using MS SQL 2005 Management studio ver 9.00.3042.00
Our SQL 2005 server is within my LAN and version 9.0.1399

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Why is the version of the SQL Server .1399?  That is not SP2 and there are many things that you should update your SQL Server for.  You may find that it could be an issue with the version of SQL Server, not the tools (your tools are SP2).
