"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

No that's not the right method to do so.
Go to http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/
Upload your s.gif there and convert it then use it.
Then add this line to the header of your html files :
<link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico" />
Actually, correct way is to save picture as .BMP in any graphical editor(our use service above) and place in in the root of your web-server. Then you need to save it as .png, and specify
<link rel="icon" href="favicon.png" />
