Fujitsu, storagebird solo, ub 35 won't start

Just bought a Fujitsu external hard drive (storagebird solo 35-ub) which is supposed to be plug and play - but it doesn't play!  I've tried it on two different PCs and get the error message telling me the device has not been recognised/is malfuctioning.  Any ideas?
