My Documents Folder Redirection after migrating to new hardware

Migrate to new hardware as outlined in the Microsoft KB doc....everything goe as as well as could be expected except the My Documents Folder Redirection is giving me fits. I have tried to use the GUI in the Server MAnagement and check that it makes the correct (I think) changes to the  GPO object yet the client computers still reference Server1 (source/original Server). GPO references Server2 (new/target Server). Server1 was demoted and removed from AD (dcpromo). If I edit the Registry key for the NetCache\Shares and remove the DWord Values on client PC they will be recreated and I cannot figure out where they are coming from.....tried to disable (not use My Document Redirection) but same result....cannot load several needed pieces of software onto CEO's (who else's) computer since the \\server1\users\my documents is not available.......Yes Server1 is offline, Yes tried to use the GPO to enforce policy, yes have lump from banging head into desk for several hours.....BTW...only on server2 is the My Documents Folder referencing \\server2\users\...

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

What errors does it show..
What are the permissions on the "My Docs" area.. also is the user an owner of that folder...

Look over this link which will fix your issues. This is a common problem when you switch out servers.

The Resultant Set of the Policy is as described above to Redirect the My Documents to \\server1\... (old server) the Properties from there are:
Move content to new location
Redirect folder back to loacl user profile location when removed
Tried the MS Knowledge base articles----clearing cache and removing database doesnot resolve
This GPO must be coming from the AD but cannot figure out where since the Server2 GPO is now set to NOT Redirect
Cannot View Properties of My Documents on XP Client Desktops other than the Location Tab

It should say which policy is causing this behaviour and you can go and find it..

Sorry JohnG....the users are owners of the folder objects....
Really trying to avoid recreating all the users profiles or removing and rejoining the computers from/to the domain-----might as well as not did the  migration and built server in it's own domain if I was going to do that.....the performance issue of any exploring while this My Doc Redir is not working is killing us....or should I say the network users are going to kil me if this is not resolved.....by yesterday. Microsoft refers to bringing the original source and path back online to sync but one would hope there has to be aother solution.....they didn't really just stop their thought process there as to what happens or........Microsoft Engineers of course they stopped thinking the real world scenarios through

Sorry to tell you that it seems like they stopped their thinking process at this point. This has been an issue for a while now.

I see the Policy.....and an error mark on user Configuration....Windows Setting...Folder Redirection..My Documents and...... My Pictures
These 2 have the wrong redirected path in the details....Cannot get this to change...the GPO column is blank....Group is everyone....is this a local PC Policy and due to conflict is it ignoring the Domain Controller???

Dont think they are local policy.. as these are marked as well. Normally if there is nothign in the line then that means there is no GPO applied there.. This means that it would fallback to the path applied inside the ntuser.dat...

This explains the processing of GPOs in order of precedence..

Well I did get this resolved in a round about way seeing the references in on of the KB articles mentioning that the PC's would have to be qable to sync with the \\server1\users and then have the Redirection disabled and all the PC's rebooted with the GPO allowing the documents to exist on the local machines when redirection is stopped. Then the redirection can be enabled on server2 and the PC's all rebooted again syncing the C:\docset.......\my docs to \\Server2\users.
Since the real server1 was having serious hardware problems I renamed an old XP box to \\server1 and just gave everyone full security and access to the users share on that box and rebooted every PC on network with Policy disabled, they sync'd (or are syncing tonight) and we will recreate policy on \\server2 to redirect for backup of the My Doc's......pretty sure this will resolve but only believe it when I see it.......will follow up in AM here....really sppreciate  all the help you guys have thrown my way on this.
Now my daily mini rant..........
What an absolute pain in the you know what.....to migrate the server to new hardware every PC has to be restarted, logged in and redirection settings allowed to be changed before taking \\server1 offline. Supposed had I known this little nuance it would have saved a lot of time (and some mild head trauma) the real irritation is that there does not seem to be a way around this once the original server is taken offline.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction....Saved me a lot of time reading through Google and other search results. Sorry for the delay in marking resolved but was not until today that I was able to turn Redirection back on in Server2....all laptop users need to come in and sync to the phony instance of server1\users first...
