Ice TCP takes 10 minutes to load after installing the HP LaserJet 4015

We replaced a Lexmark Laser with an HP Laserjet 4015.  After installing the HP software for the printer, the James River Ice TCP program takes about 10 minutes to load, then runs fine, but on exit it takes about 5 minutes to unload.  I thought I would reload the  Ice TCP, but the setup program for the Ice TCP just hangs.  When I look at the processes running I see wowexec.exe and setup.exe but they are taking 0% of the cycles. The operating system is Windows XP, and the software was running fine before the HP software install.

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

HP Printer Drivers are bloated and a tad unreliable.  That's my opinion.  If you look in Add/Remove programs you will probably see a mass of HP stuff in there, most of which is completely unnecessary and can be safely uninstalled.  Look on HP's website, there should be a more Generic driver there if you want to try that instead.

Try a Universal Printer Driver, which is listed under the Operating System you are using.  The link provided is for the "n" suffix - you might have a different suffix.

I removed all the HP items under add/remove programs.  I then ran the Wise Registry Cleaner to clean up the registry and rebooted.  It seemed that it was loading ever so slightly faster so I timed the load and it too a little under three minutes.  Takes about the same to unload and gives me an error that the Win 16 subsystem may be unstable.

Any other thoughts?

Hmm not keen on Registry Cleaners for various reasons.  If installed on systems with esoteric or non-standard software on them then they may have a problem intrerpreting the entries that are needed to be inserted in the Registry.  I would put both ICE TCP and the HP Printer Driver with the large footprint into the above category.  Best bet is to visit the www.sysinternals.com website and download some tools from there which will tell you what is being loaded up, and how long it takes to perform each operation.
