Integrating PayPal with ASP.Net 2.0

I am trying to integrate PayPal with my application. What I want to do is use a simple payment button, but I need to pass a couple of custom variables back after the transaction has gone through.

I'm really lost in trying to find a direct answer to what I need to do. IPN? PDT? Is it secure? Do I need a SSL certificate? How do I pass my variables?

I just need some simple straightforward documentation and possibly some code samples.

Any help getting directed the right way would be extremely helpful, thanks.

Let me be more specific. Really all I need is buy it now buttons that do the transaction. Can you pass back variables with Buy It Now buttons? Does it depend on whether the user goes back to the site after the transaction is made?
