Desktop icons Disappeared- Windows Vista

All of the icons and shortcuts on a Vista laptop disappeared. I can navigate to the User\desktop folder and it is populated with all the items that should be on the desktop. I tried to drag and drop, and copy and paste fprm the folder to the desktop but it only duplicates the file in the desktop folder. Ans still nothing shows on the desktop.
