compression is done in hardware for tapes, and in software for disk to disk

Need more information.

Do you have any backup software in use at all ?

Why do you want good compression.

It is usually data dependent.

I hope this helps !

I am working at a new site and they have no backup I normally use Arcserve or Veritas they have nothing. I was trying to find a solution that would allow use to backup the 46 servers they have at a fairly low cost as they are a non profit company. if I can salvage one of the old servers to backup for quick restoration of data and than a tape drive for archiving that would be great.

BackupPC uses pooling and compression to maximize your effective compression ratio. It's also free.

Other very good free solutions to consider are:
