To sratr a Data Center what specific technical facilities we need to have?

To establish a initial level data center in our company server room rather than a separate floor, what are the technical configurations, materials and facilities we need to have and how can we run an effective web server? We will be hosting only our corporate and few busy sites.

Hi, some primary question to ask :

1. how many server you will have ??
2. do you have enough band width to work as web server ??
3. do you have A.C to make your server cool always ??
3. Is there any backup webserver if, first web server is down still user will get access from the second one ??
4. do you have UPS as back up power supply ??

The Evil-ution of Network Security Threats

What are the hacks that forever changed the security industry? To answer that question, we created an exciting new eBook that takes you on a trip through hacking history. It explores the top hacks from the 80s to 2010s, why they mattered, and how the security industry responded.

if server room has enough capacity to add few more server then i am not seeing any problem of staying in server rorm.

Hi, some primary question to ask :

1. how many server you will have ??
Up to 50 servers then we will move to a new floor. Now we have 300 Square Feet to start with.

2. do you have enough band width to work as web server ??
Yes it is possible to get fiber optics and we are planning to stat with 100 mbps.

3. do you have A.C to make your server cool always ??
Ofourse we have dedicated and centralize AC if we need any thing more we can arrange.

3. Is there any backup webserver if, first web server is down still user will get access from the second one ??
Yes there will be a backup web server in a professional Datacenter. But only Important server will be backed up some thing like 5 server if it has 500GB in it.

4. do you have UPS as back up power supply ??
Ofcourse we can have a complete power backup.

We have these basic ideas I need to know what kind or swetches, routers, any softwares and other.

Ok i never implmented taht big datacentre. our one is Small , we have few server which is working as web server and mail server.

how ever,

for swetches and router, you can use Cisco, which is used by world wide

have a look at this one

Ok we can start with small one even. Please let me know how you made it. We will start from there.

have a look at this one : basic about data centre , which you know already http://searchdatacenter.techtarget.com/guide/allInOne/0,296293,sid80_gci1179973,00.html
as i said, we are small company , managing our own web server ,mail server. but i will try to give you as much as information .

Start of :

1.what is the purpose ?? just serving web site ?? and taking backup from web server ??
2.what OS are you trying to implment ?? i would say try linux. its secure and reliable, if you can set it up you dont have to touch it.
3. you said you have 100 mb fiber optics. which is good. [ i never works with fiber optics] i used adsl and dsl line, how ever you should have 2 Redundant line. if one line does not work , at least you will have another line to come all the web trafic
4. now come router and firewall : here we are using ipcop as software firewall  and router and one Load balancing router.
[ you can use cisco load balacning router and firewall [ it will all depends on how much money you want to spent] you should speak with your IT supplier for available options] , in web there are some good article about which router is good and reliable for data centre.

5... now it will come to how you want to setup your server for web and backup...

Is there any possibility to start with one server now? if yes how can we make it? So a server needs a router, a switch, UP, AC,and Admin then.? what kind of hard and software we will be needing?
0

fosiul01Commented:
Start with 2 server , one is web server , another one is backup server, it will backup all data from the web server.

"what kind of hard and software we will be needing?" = do you  mean how to develop  a web server ?? what OS, what SErver you need in the server to  work it as web server ??

Just serving website.

Ofcourse Linux might be CentOS.

Well If we are going with many servs we might go for 100mbps for two can we go for 2mbps ADSL?
We can arrange another 2mbps for redundant.

4. now come router and firewall : here we are using ipcop as software firewall  and router and one Load balancing router.

Ok so firewall is a software and then we need router and any more hard ware?

5... now it will come to how you want to setup your server for web and backup...
Yes we can install CentOS and WHM is there any other important software we need to run for server?

About this comments :
" firewall is a software and then we need router and any more hard ware?"

here, we dont have too much find, so we always look for free open source programm, such as IPCOP, its software firewall + router

you can implement either software firewall or hardware firewall, you dont need both

if you have enough fund then go for Hardware firewall , which is better and reliable . look for good cisco hardware router + firewall .

and also , you will have extra firewall in your webserver aswell which you will implment by iptables .

I hope you know , what software need to build web server such as : apache, mysql, php
.

now come to server monitoring software :  you can use Nagois [ free ] for monitoring webserver, mailserver and other services aswell.
or you can have paid software which will do all this things.
i will try to send some link on this issue. just go google and type : " linux server monitoring sotware"

whspiderAuthor Commented:
Well we shall also start with very minimum fund,
So to run a server online we need a firewall opensource software, a router, a computer installed with server software, server monitoring opensource software. Well if we have multiple server we need to have a switch or we dont need?

0

fosiul01Commented:

yes you will need switch for connecting other server aswell.
you can use manage switch or unmanage switch ( same as hub)
0

whspiderAuthor Commented:
So switch got added in the list since we are going to host two servers. And the server can be a normal computer, right?

0

fosiul01Commented:
dont use anything Desktop pc as server!!!

SErver needs to be good configuration , good ram (4 GB), dual process, and also hotswap hardrive [ Array controller]
so if one hardrive failes, you would be able to replace in instantly.

O we cant use a desktop computer as a server even with good configuration? well can you show one of two products on the net with minimum cost?

fosiul01Commented:
would you be able to order dell server ??

whspiderAuthor Commented:
Yes it is possible how much it cost approximately? what you run for your web and email server?

fosiul01Commented:
server requirement would depend , how much trafiq your server would handle.
but i got this one , i had to customize little bit for hotswap harddrive options , which came £1,005.00 [ex vat]

I could see an Indian version here. And what switch and router configuration can we use?

fosiul01Commented:
As i said, you need one Load balacning router where 2 isp will be connected.

and also managed or unmanaged switch [ speak with your IT supplier ] in india you have loads of shop here and there, so just visit some IT suppiler shop find out some good unmanaged or managed switch and also load balancing router,

when i was at Bangladesh then i used to go randomly to IT supplier shop and asked them about different type of product, but here at uk dont have that facilities

by the way : who would be responsible for your Dns server management ,

if you need any help of on that issue always open question in linux zone...

O well how shall we manager DNS? How do you manage?

hahahahahahahahahah!! open another question in linux zone, send me the link i dont mind to help you

by the way, how many IT guy do you have in your company ??

fosiul01Commented:
by dns management, i mean, you have your domain right ??
so who is responsible for the dns management for those domain ??

or you  just want to implment web server and mail server thats all.

do you have enough knowledge of implementing web and mailserver ??
0

whspiderAuthor Commented:
We have the complete control of the domain. And today after calculation, the cost is as equal as what we pay to the data center. But we are looking for local server to reduce the DNS resolving time and to save few seconds to load the site. We will be hosting only important light sites in this server. Do we have any other benefits by having local server?

Well no we do not have experience on configuring either server. But we can install Linux OS I believe it is just a software and configuring difference in both the servers, right?
