How to crop an image in the shape of a circle and fade the edges in Photoshop 7.0

Can someone tell me how to change the cropping tool into a circle or some other shape and then how to make the edges fade or soft.

    Accepted Solution

    Click and hold the marque tool until the fly-out menu appears.
    You can select the elliptical marque tool to select in a circle.
    On the toolbar you should see a Feather option. Enter a value (say 15px).
    Select the area and copy the selection. Paste onto a new layer.
