I suggest that you first make sure the Internet Explorer Error Reporting Tool is enabled, to get more info about the problem:

Try starting Internet Explorer without addons, it might be some of them:

http://samanathon.com/internet-explorer-command-line-switches/

-extoff
Runs IE7 without any add-ons. You will get this warning:

All Internet Explorer add-ons, such as ActiveX controls or toolbars, are turned off. Some webpages might not display correctly.

This one can be used with with a URL:

iexplore http://samanathon.com -extoff

in IE6, you may disable any suspicious addons from the Internet Options -> Programs tab -> Manage addons button.
