Is WSUS worth the trouble in a small network and, if so, how can I get it to work?

I recently did the upgrade from WSUS 2.0 to 3.0 and now it does not seem to run, at all.  Beyond this, I am not sure that 2.0 was running properly on my network as many of my workstations seemed to get out of date regarding updates.

Am I better off de-installing WSUS completely and just setting the workstations to get there updates from Microsoft directly?  If I do deinstall WSUS what implications does that have for my server software (Exchange; SQL; Sharepoint; etc.)?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.
