How do I resolve a win32 exception problem?

I have an XP computer that has started giving me win32 exception errors. I have run system restore to recover to 3 days ago - but to no effect. The errors consistently occur when I try to run Disc Cleanup - lets me choose the drive and then Vis Studio debugger appears with the error. Other programs seem to run OK although explorer randomly causes the error when opening folders in Documents and settings.
