A cluster of strange symptoms

I'm hoping someone will recognize this cluster of symptoms and be able to relate it to a specific underlying problem.   I'm going to list the strange things that are happening in no particular order.

Symptom 1:   If I fire up Internet Explorer, it will appear on screen and then most times (9 of 10?), it will hang.  The progress bar along the bottom will indicate that the desired web page has partially loaded but nothing appears in the window.  It doesn't seem to matter what web site I'm requesting.   I can fire up both Firefox and Chrome and they have no problems.   If I manage to fire up IE and it works, then so long as I do not dismiss it, it will continue to work fine.

Symptom 2:    I can be working in any program and suddenly the system will become unresponsive.  A glance around the screen shows that all video activity has frozen but music keeps playing.  If I keep typing, the typing buffer captures my input.   In a moment, when the screen unfreezes, the stuff I typed during the freeze appears.   These freezes always last between one and two seconds and control always returns.   I haven't been able to discern any pattern as to what provokes these freezes except that I seem to be typing.   In other words, I can't recall a time where a freeze has occurred when I was not typing - but then if they did occur then, I'd probably not be looking at the screen anyway.

I don't know that the problem with IE and the freezes are related though it seems that they both showed up at the same time.

I have rebooted the system and I have run scans with my AVG software looking for viruses and/or root-kits or whatever.   Nothing turns up.

I'm running XP on an AMD Athlon X2 CPU.   XP is up to date with all security patches and service packs.

Does anyone recognize this scenario?

Your help will be much appreciated.

No, i do not recognize the cluster of symptoms but you may like to try a repair of IE by using the sfc /scannow command, thus:
Start > Run >   then type ...
sfc /scannow

If unsuccessful try this IEFix:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Browser-Tweak/IEFix.shtml

Internet Explorer Fix is a general purpose repair utility for IE which repairs IE by registering it's core DLL files, etc.

You're probably very familiar with the scannow command, but there are some useful tips on this page>
"How to use the scannow sfc tool in Windows XP":
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Have you scanned for Malware?
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

The problem could also be an Addon interfering with IE.  Suggest you disable Addons.

If still unresolved you could check if there's a program running in the background interfering with Internet Explorer, and temporarily disable your antivirus, antispyware (even firewall) and any Symantec programs, with the PC disconnected from the internet.

With IE - go to TOOLS / INTERNET OPTIONS.  Go to the CONNECTIONS TAB and click the LAN SETTINGS button.  Make sure that all the check boxes are unchecked (unless you use a proxy server.)  The automatically detect check box is a real pain.  Also go to the SECURITY tab and put all the icons in the middle window to DEFAULT.  Sometimes when an add on or a program messes with your security settings it can mess up IE.  After you do this close all IE windows and browse the net and see if that works.

if you have system freezes, and lockups, i suggest scanning for malware; run ALL these :
     adaware :      http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
     Spybot :        http://www.download.com/3000-8022-10122137.html
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/                                                               online scan for trojans
http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html                                   download
http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english                                check the log

the other way to troubleshoot involves hardware testing...

I would suggest simply removing Chrome and see what happens as well, make sure you follow their instructions for removal and reboot to confirm.  Chrome is still beta isn't it?  It may be interfering with your IE.

hey gallymon,
taking your system is not affected by any virus or malware, you might consider to track hardware failure as well.
did you make any hardware changes recently?
system hangs and freezings may very well occur because of a bad ram or about-to-die power supplier.
i suggest you to first check your power supplier and fan for dust.

Gallymon here.   Friends, I have seen all of your suggestions and I am working my way through them in the order that they were suggested.   Thus far, I've tried the several things Jonvee suggested but with no success.    I will respond to all of your suggestions over the next few days.   Thank you so much for your help.

Gallymon, from your HijackThis logfile i suggest you remove these entries >
C:\Documents and Settings\dg\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgnsx.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\dg\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\dg\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\dg\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

[Removing "chrome" has already been suggested by mtz1of4 ]
Info on chrome.exe  >>

Do you know the IP or Domain here>

If not, this entry should be fixed>
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{7E87AD7D-EBD1-4005-B7D0-A2BD1A25CB6D}: NameServer =

Also it would be advantageous if you can reduce the number of Startup entries as described here >

Thanks, Guys.  The system is better after a number of changes and over a number of days.  In addition to your suggestions, I upgraded to IE 8 Beta.   I'm not sure that everything is 100% yet but I'm off on a long trip soon and I wanted to close this out.  Thanks for your help.  Cheers!
