This should work. What errors are you getting? have you tried ESXi which is free

You can install it on top of a base OS as windows XP or vista.you can test features like vmotion and stuff..
The attached pdf file shows step by step instructions on how to do that.
You need VMware workstation software and esx setup files ofcourse.

I learnt my esx this way.

Most probably your hardware is not compatible with ESX. What MB / controller do you have in your computer?

popularbhaskar - thx for the pdf. I tried to install ESX 3.5 on VMware Server 1.0.7 few weeks ago, but the installation was unsuccessful. Maybe this will helo.
It only works on a VMware workstation. I dont think this works on a vmware server. I am sure it should work on his hardware.
its just that we need to have the vmc file understand that the processor is VT32 compatible which means that the processor has virtualisation extension.
Try the document i shared earlier and see how it goes. Dont give up as u can do that anytime :)

haldoxp,
i have tested myself installing esx 3.5 on a workstation. but with ESX 3.5 you may not be able to start the guest operating systems which i exactly faced. Attached is the detailed explaination of why guest os will not start. if you need to also play with the guest OS as well then you need to try with ESX 3.0.

Well.. if its about setting up and testing the virtual servers you may do it on the desktop itself which i have been doing for a while. You may use softwares like openfiler to simulate SAN(shared storage) for vmotion.
All the best..Let me know how it goes.
