"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

First, did you not back up your active directory with a least a system statebackup?
If so, you can possible recover AD
What happens when your dc was rebooted?

Did you have another  domain  controller online that has a replica of the global catalogue? If so, you could sieze the FSMO roles to this dc and not have to rebuild exchange.

If you have to create a new forest, unfortunately, I would just extract the mailbox data with exmerge tool to pst's, and rebuild the exchange organization in the new forest.
