Exchange server not showing in Active Directory

I have built a new Exchange server, but when I come to create a new user in Active Directory and create a new mailbox for that user, AD does not list the new server in the Server drop down list box. All other Exchange servers in organisation show up.
The Exchange services are all started, and there are no errors in the event logs.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

by any chance did you select this server to be a front-end server?
you can confirm that by checking this new server's properties via the ESM.

Yes I did - that was nice easy points! I need it to be a front end server as well as servicing mailboxes. If I remove the tick, will this stop it OWA, activesync, RPC over HTTP etc from working?
a front-end server cannot host mailboxes. that is the reason it is not showing up when you are creating mailboxes.
this is by design and cannot be changed.
