Recover emails when user has used Shift Delete.

Hi Experts,

My boss has used 'Shift Delete' in the 'Unread' folder of his outlook 2007 client. We use SBS2003 with Exchange 2003. The feature which keeps deleted emails for 7 days is enabled but it looks like all the emails he 'Shift Deleted' on cannot be retrieved.

We use windows backup each night to tape so can go back to the night before, however, as you well know, windows backup cannot restore individual email boxes. I'm very happy if you can prove me wrong on this.

The question is:
What is the simplest way of getting is deleted emails back? Do I have to backup now and then restore the previous Store, get him to logon to exchange, get his lost email, save them to a pst file, then restore back to current backup?

Any expert advice on the best route to take would be fantastic.....

Thanks in advance, naexpert.

Click on the deleted items folder.  Then click Tools -> Recover Deleted Items.

That article is only applicable up to O2003.

The only part that is relevant to 2007 simply reiterates what I already said.  LOL

Hi,
  • Start |  Run | regedit
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Options
  • Add a DumpsterAlwaysON of type REG_DWORD with the value 1 in Hex
  • Close Registry editor.
  • Restart Outlook.
  • Go to Tools > Recover Deleted Items
Thanks

Hi all,

Thanks for your comments so far, the registry setting you mention both directly and via a web link is already set, I think this method is for older versions of outlook, 2003 and 2007 seem to set this automatically.

My boss is trying the 'Recover Deleted Items' method as I type this so we'll see if he can get anything back.

I'll let you know......

Cheers, naexpert.
