OK,
The obvious one is; is the service started?

You could try putting either your account or the SQL Service account in Local Admins whilst you apply SP2 and then remove once done.

Give this a whirl and report back.

Hmm, I can only suggest trying to reinstall SQLWriter; Browse your SQL 2005 installation CD, and in the setup folder you should see a file called SQLWriter.msi

Install that; Reboot and see if that's repaired the issue.

I had the same problem, the log file from the failed SP2 installation suggested to start the Remote Registry services and then go to add/remove programs>select SQL 2005> CHANGE and go through the installation process. Then you can apply SP2 successfully. READ the log first and see if you can find the same suggestion. Hope this helps!

Thanks

St3v3Max's solution of reinstalling SQLwriter was right on the money.  once i did that from the orignal install software, the update went through with no problem
