Access is denied
Hi,
All of a sudden none of my websites are displaying, they ask for a username and password - I think something might have gone wrong in IIS but I'm not sure how. Would anyone be able to help me work this out?
Thanks.

Hi,
It says it is but I'm not sure what should be in the username field underneath it.....

Usually, it's IURS_[machinename], but maybe it's not going to let you set the password.
What you can do is to remove and recreate the site, by default it should set the Anonymous User.

It's currently saying this - really quite stuck as to what user account it should be!

Can you recreate the site? It will reset the settings, therefore fixing your issue.

S15311185 is the name of the computer. I see the user you mean, however I still does not work when trying to use it.
And what is on the site is a phpBB forum - recreating it could be a real pain! :-(

It does it wherever I try to go, either to phansonline.net or to phansonline.net/phpBB3/ or phansonline.net/phpBB3/ind ex.php.

Another thing you can do is to create a new user (any name), make it member of the IIS_WPG group, and, then, set the website's anonymous user to it.
this is not Windows problem!!
this is custom error , what made you think , windows is asking for username and password ??

Who's saying is a Windows problem???
I'm saying that is an IIS authentication problem, but if it makes you nervous, I can leave the thread and leave you with it, no hard feelings :)

Sorry by windows problem, i meant that IIS problem, here IIS is not asking for user name and password,
if you go to his site, , its saying, access is denyed which is custom error messages. if its IIS problem, we should of see a dialog box asking user name and password , but his site is not asking that, unless the php script is modifying this error as Access denyed.
cglew : can you just upload a plain html file and try to access that html , dont place in in phpbb3 folder. see if you can see that html or not ??
bottom line is : what we are trying to help here on the issue that, IIS is asking for user name, but his site is not asking user name and password

Let me clarify - when you go to the site, it will ask you for a username and password (as I mentioned in the original question). When you click cancel, it will display the "Access is denied" message. It won't let me view any files on the server, I tried linking to an image I have hosted there and it still gives me the same problem.
If you are using Hsphere Control panel to host sites in this winbox here is the first solution.
1. Switch Off / On the Web services in your Hsphere for all sites one by one. ( If any site is working with SSL then never try this option for that site)
2. If your server is a stand alone server then here is another option but time consuming...
i) Select the site that is prompting for login access in IIS property.
Click
* Directory Security Tab "
* Ananymous Accees and Authentication Control --> Edit <-- Click this Edit
* Click the Password column and reset as per your preference. ( make sure its strong and you know it as you will have to retype the password once again)
Now its done..Access the site
If even aftr the above step the site asks for login
Try this only if the above option fails.
!. Open MMC
2. Select the user ( IUsr_machine} user for the site you reset the password and reset the password here once again.
3. Goto site and chec permission and propagate it once agin from root folder.
4. Once permission tab is over Goto "Owner Tab in permission ( Under Advanced Options" and select the appropriate owner as all there would get reset...
Try this patiently and if you are strugling try some other option...This has been done in a server that poped this problem and the nr of sites were roughly 800

The fix I mentioned is time consuming and should be done one by one for each and every site in server...I have done these fixes alone till now ... If any one has a simple solution plz do share
