Photoshop alternative (GIMP?)

I need a free Photoshop alternative with layer sets - I tried GIMP but it doesn't seem to support them.

Is there a way to make give GIMP the gift of layer sets or is there another app out there as good as PS or GIMP with layer sets already included?

All help greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Justin

Yes, GIMP has layers.

If you open Layer Dialog (Windows > Lockable DialogsLayers or ctrl+L), you can get a list of layers, which allows you to work with icons and with right click on each layer in the list. More about Layers dialog you can see on http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-dialogs-structure.html#gimp-layer-dialog.

I have Layers dialog always open, it is very important tool :-))

Do you now see all the functions you need?

Hi brundo,

Thanks for the comment but I need layer sets, not just layers - some of the images I'm dealing with have been created in PS with several hundred layers and are impossible to deal with without layersets...

Cheers,

Justin

Within GIMP: If you click between the eye icon and the layer thumbnail, you get a chain icon, which enables you to group layers for operations on multiple layers (for example with the Move tool or a transform tool).

Is this what you need?

The chain is only for moving layers together... :-((

AFAIK, there is no such tool in GIMP which enables you to organize layers in a tree and apply the same effect to all the layers in one branch.

Such a shame - GIMP is excellent in so many ways, how can they have omitted this crucial tool?

Do you know of any other software which does have layer sets, could replace PS and is free?  Do you know if it would be possible to write such functionality for GIMP?

Cheers,

Justin

I know only Paint.NET - it is _very_ simple program, has layers, but no layer sets.

Regarding GIMP... it is an open source program, maybe somebody would like to include your idea to GIMP. Look at http://www.gimp.org/develop/, under participate in the UI brainstorm... (there are some similar ideas there).

The Gimp does not support layer sets. It was looked at in development over six years ago, but apparently fell off the radar for the developers.
