windows thumbnail preview not working

Does anyone know why the thumbnail preview in windows would stop working or get turned off. normaly in an expolorer window if your view is set to thumbnails (or large icons in vista) and the have the correct software to display the file type (say pdf in this case) windows will generate a preview of the file as a thumb. but this has stopped working on a users computer. not critical but an interesting why question.

Thanks

Check Control Panel->Folder Options->View and make sure that "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is NOT selected.

The thumbnail cache may be corrupted, causing it not to work.  You need to find and delete the hidden file thumbs.db that XP keeps in any folder where thumbnails are enabled.  The next time that folder is displayed with thumbnails enabled, Windows will rebuild the file.
