I am trying to recover data from a formatted drive. I understand I can use Knoppix, I have created the disk and booted into Knoppix.

What program/utility would be best to use?

While browsing around on knoppix, I notice that I can't seem to find the oboard hardrive on the PC I am using and the formatted one? They are both sata? do I need sata drivers?

Where you're working on a formatted drive it makes things a bit more difficult but not impossible. Check this link to show you how to use testdisk and photorec from knoppix to recover your data.
