you have not mentioned the error that you get. it may be because of the macro. disable macro and try again. also please check this links

error is: * Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
* Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space.
* Open the file with the text recovery converter

I would try opening the document under the "Recover text from any document" option

File, Open, in the dropdown box, select, Recover text from any document...

OR

You could try -- at a blank document, Insert, File, browse to the problem document....select it, and click Insert
