I'm trying to add user to a Ubuntu driven laptop, I am the administrator and for some odd reason my password to authenticate and unlock the user settings screen is not recognized. Need help to overcome this. Funny enough when I login to Ubuntu from main screen password is recognized.

The user you are logged in as probably isn't a member of the groups included in the /etc/sudoers file. Make sure you are a member of the admin group, as that group should have the necessary rights to use sudo.
